What happens during an ambassador visit?

A typical ambassador visit lasts one lesson (45–90 minutes) and includes:

The professional introduces themselves. Who they are, what they do and how they ended up in the industry. Ambassadors tell their own story in their own words.

Introducing the job. What does a typical working day look like? What skills are needed? What’s the best part of the job? This is often the part pupils find most interesting.

Questions and answers. Pupils are free to ask questions. A good ambassador answers honestly, even to difficult questions.

A possible look at the vehicles and equipment. If the visit takes place outdoors or on the company’s premises, pupils can see vehicles and equipment up close. That makes the experience one to remember.

How do you book an ambassador visit?

Ambassador visits are arranged through the Hyppää kyytiin project. Booking a visit is easy:

1. Fill in the booking form on the For guidance counsellors page and choose your region.
2. Book at least three weeks before your preferred date.
3. Make sure the room has a computer, projector and speakers. The teacher present takes care of the technical set-up.
4. You’ll receive the presentation materials in advance, and the ambassador will arrive at the school at the agreed time.

Visits are especially suited to pupils in years 7–9, for whom a TET placement is coming up. They also work as part of career guidance in lower secondary school.

Tips for teachers ahead of the visit

Prepare pupils in advance. Tell them who’s coming and which industry it’s about. Ask pupils to think of questions beforehand.

Leave room for discussion. The best insights come when pupils are free to ask questions. Don’t steer the conversation too much.

Link the visit to the TET placement. An ambassador visit is a natural lead-in to planning the TET period. Afterwards, pupils can look for TET placements with more interest.
